Living at an altitude
of 14,000 to 16,000 feet in the inhospitable terrain
and long winters of Changthang, Chang-pa graze
sheep. The small wollen hair (Pashm) from these
sheep serves as raw material for the famous Pashmina
shawls. |

| Hemis Fair |

| Monks performing "Cham"
(Mask Dance). The costumes are made especially for
the fair and are only worn only once in twelve years.
Cham is a religious ritual, but to boost up tourism
it is promoted as a festival where thousands come
to see lamas dance. |

| Thanka painting of Guru
Padmasambhava |

Leh |
| The Monkey year fair comes
once in 12 years. One of the most sacred objects
to see this year is the four-storey thanka painting
of Guru Padmasambhava. The thanka is a patchwork
of silk cloth of various colours. It was prepared
in 1750 - 1760 by Rgyalsras Mipham Tsewang. |
